Why is Cradle to Cradle Certification Important?

At Motz, we’re committed to building and replacing fields responsibly and sustainably. To achieve this, we partner with like-minded companies who share our vision for the future. In 2018, we joined forces with Shaw Sports Turf to manufacture our line of synthetic turf products. One of the reasons we aligned with Shaw was their commitment to research and development, and continuously seeking a better way to manufacture turf.

Shaw’s pledge of sustainability is reflected in their efforts. Since 2006, they have reclaimed and recycled almost 1 billion pounds of carpet and assessed more than 1.6 billion pounds of raw materials for material health in 2021. The lessons learned through their commitment to sustainability in residential and commercial carpets have benefitted synthetic turf. For example, the NXTPlay pad is an innovative pad that is made from reclaimed synthetic turf fields. One reclaimed field yields one field of pad.

In pursuit of sustainability, Shaw achieved Cradle to Cradle certification for their main turf products. The first of its kind in the industry, Shaw’s synthetic turf, combined with Geofill infill and NXTPlay® recycled turf shock pad, creates a fully Cradle to Cradle Certified® system.

This certification showcases their dedication to creating products that are safe, circular, and responsibly made. The Cradle to Cradle certification requires that all materials used must be fully biodegradable or recyclable, allowing them to be made into a new product at the end of their useful life. This preserves resources and reduces landfill waste.

Shaw has been committed to Cradle to Cradle design for more than 20 years, making them a global leader in sustainability. According to Kellie Ballew, Shaw Industries’ Vice President of Global Sustainability and Innovation, “We have more certifications than any manufacturer in the world, and the addition of Shaw Sports Turf reiterates our unwavering focus on putting people at the center of all we do – what we refer to as sustain[HUMAN]ability®.”

Through our partnership with Shaw, around 90% of Motz turf products are Cradle to Cradle Certified®, making them an important part of our sustainability efforts. Cradle to Cradle products pair seamlessly with the Motz zero waste initiative as a responsible and sustainable approach to building synthetic turf fields. At Motz, we’re proud to deliver these sustainable solutions to our customers.
