How to Install Artificial Turf Infill

So, you’ve finally decided to install that artificial turf backyard. Now the only thing standing between you and a beautiful outdoor space is one final project: installing artificial turf infill.

Infill makes up the foundation of an artificial turf system, holding it all together. With properly installed artificial turf, 90% of the weight should be infill. The other 10% is the turf and the pad.

Infill will help in the following areas:

  1. Infill keeps turf blades standing tall, filling the space in between and providing support. It helps turf look like real grass, preventing the blades from lying flat and looking matted.
  2. Infill absorbs impact and adds cushioning. It makes turf more comfortable to walk and play on. It also protects turf fibers from damage, increasing its lifespan.
  3. Infill improves drainage by allowing water to pass between turf blades rather than pooling on the surface. Preventing waterlogging keeps the turf healthy and usable.
  4. Infill keeps the turf in place, weighing it down and preventing wrinkling, lifting, or shifting. Infill is especially important for heavy traffic areas.
  5. Infill adds an extra layer of protection for the backing of the artificial grass, preventing damage from the sun, wear and tear, and animals.

If you’re wondering what infill to choose to finish off your project, use Envirofill

Envirofill delivers that perfect finishing touch you’re looking for, and provides lasting odor protection against pet urine.

There are many videos about “how to install artificial turf,” but there isn’t as much information on how to properly add the synthetic turf infill needed to complete the project.

Check out the video below to watch an infill installation demo!

How do I add infill to artificial turf?

Here’s a quick breakdown of the process:

  1. Powerbroom: When the turf is installed, it’s usually laying flat. “Brooming” the turf lifts up the fibers so the infill will be able to fall into place. When you make the first pass over the turf with the broom, it’s important to move across the surface in straight parallel rows, applying consistent pressure throughout.
  2. Envirofill is homogeneous, so it doesn’t need to be mixed. Cut open your bag and fill your spreader bucket with the infill. When the spreader is full to a comfortable weight, start spreading along the turf and move sideways in parallel rows. Make sure to determine the correct application rate. The required depth of the infill will vary depending on the density of the turf you’re installing.
  3. Once you have spread your first layer of Envirofill, use your Powerbroom to push the infill deeper into the turf, making sure there are no granules left on top of the grass blades. As you broom, pull the fibers back instead of pushing them flat.
  4. If there are flat or matted areas, more Envirofill may be needed. You can spread the infill by hand and use a bristle brush to spread it evenly, going against the grain of the turf.
  5. Leafblow the entire surface to spread out any remaining infill that is sitting on the turf or blow away any loose debris. Direct the air against the grain of the turf.
  6. Once completed, you should not notice the Envirofill on the surface. If you do, make sure to spread it out.
  7. Finally, grab your friends, family, and pets, and enjoy your new outdoor space!

Infill is the icing on the cake. It’s the product that gives your turf life, makes it stand up, and helps it look complete. So, grab your Envirofill, a bucket, and a broom, and get to work while your neighbor peers over the fence admiring your beautiful new turf yard.
