Bishop Hartley High School

Project Overview

As an esteemed institution in the heart of Columbus, Ohio, Bishop Hartley High School was struggling with its worn out athletic field that had been previously installed by another provider. After long seasons of games played on the surface, the artificial turf field faced multiple issues – sinkholes and drainage problems needed constant repairs, affecting its playability and hindering the school’s athletic ambitions.

Having heard about Motz’s athletic turf projects from St. Francis DeSales, another iconic institution in the area, Bishop Hartley’s leadership frequently contacted Motz for damage control, repair, and remediation work. Motz’s timely help, expertise, and spotless work ethic showed the school over and over again why Motz had such a high reputation in the world of synthetic turf fields

In spite of heavy maintenance work, the synthetic sports turf was feeling the impacts from wear. When the field directors realized that it was time for a significant overhaul, they had no one they trusted more than Motz to handle it.

The Situation

Working with the city of Columbus presented some challenges and Motz helped shepherd the school through any obstacle that appeared.

The site is urban and dated, and certain government-stipulated field requirements weren’t in place. Motz needed to provide a solution that would be up to code with new field requirements to ensure a high-performing and long-lasting field.

And then, of course, were the relentless drainage issues, which weighed more heavily on the field’s performance and playability, because the surface was meant to support three sports: lacrosse, football, and soccer.

Motz needed to resolve the drainage issues and provide a safe and high-performance field to meet students’ and campus’ needs.

The Play

Motz quickly got to the involuted work of rebuilding Bishop Hartley’s field. The first step? Fully removing the existing turf system, shock pad, drainage, and all. Motz’s team had to start from scratch, excavating and installing an entirely new synthetic turf system to address the unique challenges of an urban construction site.

Motz and the Bishop Hartley team mutually decided to install Motz’s patented Twenty-Four/Seven synthetic turf system, which has been performing well for other institutions, such as the Pickerington Schools Fields, and Ohio State University’s Ohio Stadium.

The Twenty-Four/Seven system is renowned for its multi-sport versatility and endurance, featuring unique slit-film fibers for consistent play and a robust backing for stability. This makes it a solid support for lots of back-to-back play.

Bishop Hartley’s leadership also decided to go with a sand rubber infill. Together, the system’s all-weather resilience makes it an excellent choice for the school as it is located in Columbus, OH, which is prone to thunderstorms, cold snaps, and heatwaves.

The Win

Committed to Sports Excellence

After years of struggling to maintain their field’s playability for three different sports, Bishop Hartley High School began a new era of athletic excellence. The Twenty-Four/Seven turf system, engineered for high performance, has turned the artificial turf field around, and the field now serves as a year-round venue for football, soccer, and lacrosse, providing a safer and high-quality surface for athletes.

Trusted Industry Partner

After relying on Motz365 Field Aide for timely, efficient, and effective field repair and maintenance services, the high school’s leadership had already experienced the turf specialist’s world-class expertise. When time revealed that there was no other way but to re-establish their synthetic turf field, it was an easy decision for Bishop Hartley High School to choose Motz. This project went beyond merely meeting local field requirements and regulations, setting a new benchmark in providing a safer and superior quality surface for student-athletes.
