Greenville Senior High School

Project Overview

Originally opened in 1936, Sirrine Stadium has long been one of the most recognizable athletic venues in South Carolina. Home to Greenville High School athletics and a historic gathering place for the Greenville community, the stadium has hosted generations of competition, events, and championship moments.

As usage demands increased across football, soccer, lacrosse, training, and community events, Greenville County Schools moved forward with plans to modernize the facility with a synthetic turf system designed to improve durability, consistency, and year-round playability. (GREENVILLE JOURNAL)

Motz was selected to install the new synthetic turf system at Sirrine Stadium, delivering a high-performance surface built to support heavy use while preserving the identity and atmosphere of one of the state’s most historic venues.

The Situation

Sirrine Stadium’s legacy and visibility created unique expectations for the field upgrade.

The project required a surface capable of handling:

  • High-volume athletic usage across multiple sports
  • Increased scheduling flexibility throughout the year
  • Consistent field performance in varying weather conditions
  • Long-term durability with reduced recovery time compared to natural grass

At the district level, Greenville County Schools identified increasing maintenance demands and limited field recovery time as ongoing challenges for heavily used natural grass stadiums. (GREENVILLE JOURNAL)

For Sirrine Stadium specifically, the goal was to modernize the playing surface without losing the character and presence associated with the historic facility.

The Play

Motz installed a synthetic turf system engineered to provide dependable performance under continuous use.

The project included:

  • Removal of the existing natural grass surface
  • Construction of a free-draining stone base and drainage system
  • Installation of new synthetic turf featuring custom field markings and school branding
  • Supporting field infrastructure improvements to enhance overall functionality

The new system was selected to support:

  • Consistent footing and playability
  • Improved field drainage and recovery
  • Extended daily and seasonal usability
  • Reduced maintenance disruption

By transitioning to synthetic turf, Sirrine Stadium gained a surface capable of supporting modern athletic demands while maintaining a professional appearance throughout the year.

The Win

More Availability. More Consistency. Less Downtime.

The new field has transformed Sirrine Stadium into a more reliable and resilient athletic facility.

Key benefits of the installation include:

  • Greater field availability throughout the year
  • Reduced weather-related interruptions
  • Consistent performance across multiple sports
  • Lower recovery time between events and practices
  • Long-term durability under high traffic conditions

For Greenville, the project created a modern playing surface capable of supporting both current athletic demands and future growth.

Respecting the Legacy of Sirrine Stadium

Few high school venues carry the history and identity of Sirrine Stadium. The field upgrade was designed not only to improve performance, but to ensure the facility remains a centerpiece for Greenville athletics for years to come.

By combining modern turf technology with thoughtful installation and field design, Motz helped deliver a surface that supports the next generation of athletes while honoring the tradition of the stadium itself.

A Surface Ready for the Future

As athletic programs continue to evolve and facility usage expands, Sirrine Stadium is now equipped with a surface designed to meet those demands.

The new synthetic turf system provides:

  • Reliable year-round playability
  • Enhanced durability for continuous use
  • Consistent field conditions for athletes
  • Long-term performance for one of South Carolina’s most historic stadiums

For Motz, the project reflects a continued focus on delivering high-performance athletic environments built to perform at every level of play.
