Zero Waste: Our Motz Solution for
Sustainable Sports Turf
What Does Zero Waste Mean
We're guided by our core values, one of which is innovation. Continuous improvement and better approaches to our products and projects is part of our DNA. As we have found, innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. We are committed to sustainable and more responsible ways to build or replace synthetic turf fields. The quantity of materials in a field replacement can exceed 500,000lbs and utilize up to 15 dumpsters of waste. Sorting and sending these materials to recycling partners can put these resources to a productive use and keep them from the landfill.
Sustainable sports turf fields are possible and we've reduced the number of dumpsters on Zero Waste project sites by 95%. We have established partnerships and developed processes to separate materials and ship them for recycling into useful products - some of which could go into your next field!
Benefits of a Zero Waste Project
- Nearly every aspect can be recycled, including the old turf, new turf waste, supersacks, and pallets
- Materials can be upcycled into products for a new turf field (shock pads | nailer boards)
- Reduces number of dumpsters used from a project by 95%

Synthetic Turf
Our partners at Shaw Sports Turf have developed a shock pad, NXTPlay, that uses 1 field of recycled turf for every 1 field of pad. The synthetic turf we remove from a Zero Waste project can be shipped to Shaw to upcycle into shock pad for a new field!
Turf scraps can also be upcycled into nailer boards, which are used on the perimeter of new fields.
Nailer Board
Best Plus Lumber has a product called Green Board, which is exactly as its named: a nailer board manufactured from at least 40% synthetic turf. Starting in 2023, we use Green Board on all of our new installations.
Shock Pad
Most shock pads on the market today can be used in two turf field lifecycles. Reusing the shock pad in a field replacement eliminates it from going to a landfill. We also collect scraps during the install and send them back to the manufacturer.
Additionally, the leading shock pad options are made from sustainable materials. Shaw's NXTPlay pad is made from recycled turf and Schmitz's ProPlay pad is created from recycled foam.
Infill
Sand & rubber infill can be reused into the new field. Envirofill, with a 16-year warranty, can be reused 100% back into the new field. Organic products like Safeshell can be used as topdressing on natural turf or composted.
Misc Materials
Items from the site that can be recycled or reused:
- Cardboard
- Water Bottles
- Scrap Foam Pad
- Infill Supersacks
- Wood Pallets
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The type of infill and desire to reuse or replace with new has a big impact on the cost. Additionally, distance to our recycling partners can increase or decrease through the cost of freight.
No. A zero waste project generally takes the same amount of time as a standard installation.
Zero waste is generally defined as a situation in which >95% of waste is diverted from the landfill in productive use. We have successfully hit this mark on new builds and replacement projects.
There are some hard to recycle items that are thrown away at the end of the project. This could equal as much as one dumpster of material (a standard replacement could use upwards of 15 dumpsters).
We track the materials and their destination. We can provide bills of lading (trucking receipts) and chains of custody to show where the material was sent and how it was used.
