The STC Awards is a member program designed to honor members who help to promote the association’s values and advance the synthetic turf industry.
Joe Motz graduated from The Ohio State University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in horticulture. Soon after, he founded The Motz Group, Inc., initially as a landscape management and grounds care business. Driven by Joe’s vision and dedication, the company evolved, becoming a leader in high-performance natural grass installations for major global venues and synthetic turf fields for over 750 schools, parks, and stadiums. Joe’s commitment to meeting industry needs also led him to launch a turf maintenance division, acquire the innovative Envirofill infill, and champion a turf reclamation initiative, all of which solidified The Motz Group as a trailblazer in the turf industry.
Beyond his company, Joe has been a prominent figure in advancing the sports and landscape turf industry. He served as National Chairman of the Synthetic Turf Council (STC) and engaged in numerous leadership roles within organizations focused on industry improvement and sustainability. In 2018, Joe began transitioning ownership of The Motz Group to its employees, transforming it into a Certified Employee Owned organization, a move that underscored his commitment to his team’s success and empowerment. This dedication culminated in The Motz Group becoming Certified Evergreen by the Tugboat Institute in 2022, a designation that reflects the company’s commitment to enduring quality and purpose-driven growth.
As Founder, Joe has shifted focus toward the company’s philanthropic endeavors through Motz Moves. In 2024, he launched Paddle for a Purpose, a meaningful initiative in partnership with The Bridge Adaptive Sports, furthering his commitment to social impact and community support. Joe’s legacy at The Motz Group continues to inspire, blending industry leadership with a mission to give back and support adaptive sports initiatives.
