The Situation

Desiring natural grass and synthetic turf playing surfaces at their new grounds that would meet international standards for safety and performance, the club turned to the field experts at The Motz Group.

The Play

During the planning phase, Motz worked in a design-assist role to support the project architect and civil engineer in developing field layouts, drainage and irrigation plans, netting and fencing systems, and curbing/adjacent hard surfaces. Dubbed the Mercy Health Training Facility, the venue includes a full size SportGrass™ synthetic turf field and 250,000ft2 of a stabilized ryegrass. About 150,000ft2 of the grass was farm produced and installed as mature sod and the remainder was grown-in on site. All field construction was handled by Motz and play began as scheduled in the spring of 2019.

Bringing The Motz Group on board, with their tremendous experience and being in our backyard, was a natural fit. We’re so pleased they are part of these truly generational projects we’ve undertaken.

The Win

  • PLAYABILITY
The stabilized grass system allowed for immediate playability upon installation for FC Cincinnati to prepare for their season. Due to the flexibility of the system, worn out areas are able to be replaced rapidly and continue with activity.
  • WEATHER READY
Based in Cincinnati, MHTC’s surface has to be prepared for Midwest weather conditions. The product used is an equally suited grass for warm and cool seasons, making it perfect for year-round play.
  • FLEXIBILITY
The grass system can be established in the venue or on a sod farm and can also be matched to the venue’s rootzone.
